Featured Artist Interview:
On a warm winters day (Friday January, 27) in San Antonio, Texas Our chief editor, Justin Espinosa awakes to find text messages from a Boston area code number with two simple messages. The first reading "This is Moufy's Number: XXX.XXX.XXX". The second reading "Call in one hour." With that he hopped out of bed, read over and prepared the intended questions and made the phone call at 2pm/1pm central.
Espi Music: Hey Moufy what originally sparked your rap career?
MOUFY: I had just gotten kicked out of high school, and at the time I had a lot of frustration because that was a hard time for me at that age. I began just writing down how I felt and putting that into lyrics and that was the beginning.
Espi Music: Really cool man, If you had to name a few off of the top of your head who would you say you take influence musically from?
MOUFY: Jay-Z, Kanye, I have a lot because I listened to a lot of people growing up. 2 Pac, Biggie, the classics of course. I thought 50 cent had a great era.
Espi Music: Is there any other music you listen to besides hiphop?
MOUFY: Yeah, I actually listen to everything which is weird. I mean I don't follow everything as heavy as I do with hiphop but I do listen to some country, some R&B songs and a lot of other stuff. You could say I am pretty diverse musically. I also like spoken word and poetry, not to say that I'm all over it but I do enjoy it.
Espi Music: So can you tell us where the name "Moufy" derived from?
MOUFY: Moufy derived from a neighborhood friend named Tye. when I was younger I used to go by the name "Mouf", my friend Tye just added a "Y" to it at around age 11 or 12. "Moufy" just had a nice ring to it. After that people around started callin' me "Moufy" and it was so fitting that it just stuck and continued to be the name I go by today.
Espi Music: So with your latest mixtape "Boston Lights" so far it has a little over 17,000 downloads on Datpiff.com. Can you tell me what success you have seen from the mixtape so far?
MOUFY: To be forward with it, It definitely gained me a lot of fans. It also helped to show a lot of the fans that I'm diverse, and that I can put together a good solid piece of work. Its good music at the end of the day and that's what Boston Lights was, a great collection of songs that I wrote that is sorta just payin' its dividends right now

Espi Music: So we saw your Miss Newton video man and I gotta ask is there any meaning behind the track and the video as a whole?
MOUFY: That was just me trading a story that was relevant to a time where I was at, I was in high school when I wrote it. That topic pertains to anyone and everyone who understands the hardships of peer pressure and binge drinking. The track itself is not based on a true story but rather off of similar events that I have heard.
Espi Music: So whose Idea was it to make a short film for the Miss Newton track? Was it your crew, or did someone hear the track and say hey this is an interesting song we can do something special with it?
MOUFY: We just thought the song was great you know? We thought it was different and we just wanted to shoot a video, and the track was such a good story that it turned out to be a short film. That's how that video came to be.
Espi Music: Well I gotta say man personally that track and short film have always stuck out to me and was actually the first impression we ever had of Moufy on Espi Music. So as far as the Throw My 3s video and track goes can you give us a little back ground behind the song?
MOUFY: That song derived from just something me and my guys do. You know like when were at a party, dancin', havin' a good time we'll throw our 3's up. we grew up doin' that, that's our version of reppin', just throwin' our 3's up. So that song actually came from stuff that's really true, I just put what we do into a song and it just did really well.
Espi Music: Really Cool Man. So as far as Star Gang goes is there any kind of message you all are trying to get across or is that kinda a crew thing.
MOUFY: Star Gang comes from a group of kids that come from modest beginnings that are basically reaching for the stars. Anyone can be apart of Star Gang, that's what we find to be so great about our group. Yeah we are involved in hiphop heavily and that's the genre that we specify it as but Star Gang is for everyone. Star Gang is for anyone who ever had a dream, anyone who likes good music and anyone who is trying to better themselves. If you yourself have the same values mentioned, then your part of star gang cause your reaching for the stars.

Espi Music: So is there any key or peak moment that sticks out to you in your career so far?
MOUFY: I would have to say getting played on Jam'n 94.5, its crazy cause that station has so much control over my region. Also working with The Renegades some producers out in Miami, that was dank.
Espi Music: Do you travel around a lot?
MOUFY: Yeah, I actually came back from New York like two days ago. I came from Miami last week, like I said before I worked with the renegades out there. For the most part we are just keeping things moving and doing shows in between and recording music.
Espi Music: So as far as next projects go what can the fans look forward to in the future?
MOUFY: An album, no details on the release or the name for that so far. We are literally in the ground stages of the project so we'll let you all know when more information becomes available. What I can tell you though is we are trying to put together something special. The mixtapes are like the cool beginning stages you know, they help to build buzz. As far as the album goes I really feel every artist has got to have those keystone pieces in your career that really make a statement and cement their career, that's the direction we are goin' for as far as the album goes.
Espi Music: So can we expect any performances down here in the south anytime soon?
MOUFY: Definitely Star Gang is coming to the south, Star Gang is going nation wide but yeah we'll be in Texas soon. We are currently in conversation with the down south area but we'll keep you updated as that information becomes available.
Espi Music: So in closing is there anything you would like the readers of Espi Music to know?
MOUFY: I really hope everyone can go to Moufy.com and subscribe and just get in touch with the movement a little bit.Find out where I'm from and what I'm about and I promise they wont regret it. Find me on twitter at Moufy617, search me Moufy on Facebook and if you could like the page I would really appreciate that.
